Status Update

Just throwing out a quick update to everyone that, as Sidmouth said, the item request backlog has been cleared up and should hopefully continue to be cleared up. Housing requests are being worked as we are able to, and slowly those are being taken care of to catch up with some of the more current requests. Please don't be afraid to submit any item or housing requests, we can handle them!

Also, for you crafters, be aware that while some of the crafting branches may seem a little slim in their output, don't feel limited by what the code provides. Try and think of products your person would be able to craft with yours skills, and should someone request, or you wish to request, send up an item you wish to craft that isn't in the game. Not only will this allow you to more fully enjoy your selected profession but it will also help fill the missing gaps in crafting as they evolve and grow in the future.

Hope everyone continues to enjoy the game!

Status of items and houses

The item backlog is now gone. The housing backlog persists, so if you're wondering why you got an item back immediately but no word on your house, that's why. If you filed an item request more than a couple days ago and haven't gotten any sort of response on it, then we don't have it and you need to resend it. It's possible that some things fell between the cracks. Please remember to use the new email address: ss.requests@gmail.com

Since items can now be handled fairly quickly, consider helping the local Telanthan economy by filing a couple of requests. Many of the crafting trees are hamstrung right now because they lack more complex items. So if you are putting in custom item requests, please consider finding an appropriate crafter and giving them the job. This will go a long way to making the Telanthan economy more interesting and realistic, and you'll save 200 rpp per item.

On the flip side of this, crafters need to advertise who they are! The population is thin right now and people may not realize that there is a carpenter or leather worker or whatever around. Also, consider taking on apprentices. One of the reasons the crafting population is so thin is because many people feel that roleplay opportunities for crafters are more limited. If newbies have apprenticeships and other networks to turn to, they may be more likely to attempt a crafting role.

Tutorial: Object Editing

Mina's Tutorial on Object Creating

Contact a staff member and acquire yourself a set of vnums to use for the objects you are going to create.

See if there is a similar object in the game to what you are wanting to make. Make sure the object is necessary and there isn't one already in existance. There's no point in having three plain wooden stools all with near identical descriptions.

The command to begin editing an object (whether new or old) is oedit <vnum>. For example: oedit 18020. This will bring you into a menu like the following:

As you can see from the above, like the room editing system, the object editing system is also 'menu driven' with the options listed in bright green numbers & letters down the left of each column. At first, the list of things that need to be set looks a little daunting, but don't worry too much, much of the options we don't need to worry about.

Item Number: This is the object vnum and usually cannot be changed.

Keywords: This is automaticaly generated based on the short and long desc.

Short Desc: The short description is the description you see when the object is worn or in your inventory. For example: "pair of pants". It should have no Capital letter, or a/an/the or trailing full-stop on the end. Ideally be as descriptive as possible in about 40 characters.

Short Plural: This short description is the one used when there are more than one of the object. For example: "pairs of pants". It should have no Capital letter, or a/an/the or trailing full-stop on the end. Ideally be as descriptive as possible in about 40 characters. Both the short and the short plural should always be completed on an object

Long Desc: The long description is added to the end of the short description. For example: "with black buttons" It should have no trailing fullstop on the end.

Long Plural: The long plural is used when there are multiple of an object. Sometimes it is no different to the standard long desc. For example: "with black buttons" It should have no trailing fullstop on the end.

Look Desc:: This is the full descriptin you see when you "look" at an object. This must be completed. And it must be formatted before you leave the editor with /f. If you do not, this WILL crash the mud.

Type: Set your object type to the most relevant. Below are the list of object types available to you. The object type determines what actions are available to you with it and also the types of values you can set in the "Values" option later. It is important to set this before you set the values option.

Weight: The weight should be in grams. You may need to do some research here to find out how much the object should way. If you're not sure, leave it for now and post a query on the object on the forums and we'll work on finding a typical weight for the object. Enter this with the g on the end, for example: 200g

Base Value: There are a couple of cost guides in the forums, if you're not sure, look at similar objects for guidelines, if you're still unsure, do a post on the forums requesting help. This is the average cost of the item, rather than the cost for a high quality or low quality item.

Quality: This should always be set to average, if you think an item should be set to something else, please speak to a staff member.

Values: What you set here is determined by what type of object it is. Food will require you to set how full you get when you eat the object, whether it is poisonous or not, etc. Some object types, such as furniture, might not require you to set any values at all.

Applies menu: This is used for magical items, contact a staff member before creating any items with magical effects.

Extra descriptions menu: Selecting this option will take you into a new mini-menu allowing you to set extra "look" description of the object. Set the relevant keywords and an appropriate look description. You can set several.

Quit: This takes you out of the menu. Select Y to save it. Once you have finished building, contact a staff member to do a "saveall". This will save the work to the area files.

Post the item on the forum. Copy the information you see when you are in the main menu to the appropriate section on the forum.

A good beginning...

"Brevity is a great charm of eloquence."

With that in mind, I will try to be brief. The reason that we (the Sieglings) are here is to work, and that is what I plan on doing. I have been playing Shadow Siege for some many months now, and as a player, I think it goes without saying that it is the best game I have played. But, this isn't my first rodeo: I have a wealth of experience insofar as building and administration goes, as I've been doing it for the last six years or so, and I've been playing MU*'s for longer than that. It is my hope that I can use the skills that I have developed to improve Shadow Siege.

The first order of concern is, as my fellow Sieglings have mentioned, getting to the backlog of housing and custom item requests. As soon as training is completed, I will do my best (in conjunction with the other Sieglings) to get to those requests, but that is only the beginning. Once we have dealt with those requests, our goal is to establish a 48 hour turnover on all new requests. In my mind, this is a very realistic aim, and is a level of service you should look for in the future.

"All pain is either severe or slight, if slight, it is easily endured; if severe, it will without doubt be brief."

In the meantime, please bear with us. I know that the lethargic nature of requests can be painful for RP, but I think it is a slight pain...and one that will not be lasting.

Greetings from Catmug

Valued Readers.

A hearty greeting to you from Catmug.

I've been playing SS for quite some time, and some of you may know me as one of the more annoying,"what, she's always online?" types that you see around ingame... all the time. That would mostly be because I have no life. Which is all the better for the game! (More time for building)

Any housing, building (item, ect) requests, i'll gladly to my best to see to.

Well, thats about it..

Siegling March

Greetings and Salutations from Rahmiel. I am overly pleased to announce that I am one of the other Siegians in training, or Siegling, to be exact.

I've played on Shadow Siege for about a year now, though I do admit to having a couple of months time in there for a break or two. Shadow Siege was not my first roleplay mudding experience, but I found it to be the most indepth one, with an amazing community and wonderful roleplay. Most of my roleplay experience comes from the multitude of tabletop gaming I've done throughout my life, both as a player and game master for several different mainstream and custom systems. I've also done some scripting work on a few game servers, though I admit nothing of this style.

As the other Sieglings have said before, we're all looking to tackle the backlog of custom items and housing requests that have built over the past while. Once this is finished, I know we each have in mind a project which, hopefully, everyone will come to enjoy in the future.

That's enough from me, so I bid you all a good day, and even a super totally awesome great day if someone gives me some cheesecake.

Salutations, and (Melchior willing) Edification

Greetings one and all. I am Enoch, and I am honored to contribute to the content of Shadow Siege. And contribute I shall. Of first priority is easing the workload of our inestimable Staff. This benefits me as much as anyone, for I am an avid player. Custom items and housing requests should see prompt resolution once I, and my worthy fellow Siegelings, are brought up to speed. From there I hope to dive directly into the crafts. More available items, along with the means to harvest and craft these items, is my personal piece of zealotry.

My experience in gaming is predominantly table top, where I have a ridiculous quantity of experience (one might assume that experience speaks to quality as well, and I hope this proves to be the case). I have been a "game master" of a great many systems, honing my ability to craft an engaging and immersive story. While my experience with MUDs takes a distant second to my pen & paper RPG experience, it never the less spans more than a decade. I have been both a content developer and plot developer. It is my fond wish that these skills bring something new and valued to Shadow Siege.

To borrow a quote from a series I love: "See you in the World."

Siegling rush

Hi everyone, I'm one of your five new sieglings. We transform and combine, Voltron style, to form a Siegelord, but my role in the finished product is as the Siegelord's mucous membranes, which isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds.

I've played Shadowsiege for somewhere between three and four months now. I've been mudding for about 11 years on all sorts of different muds. I've done a lot of building in the past and some admin work for muds as well.

Turning custom item and housing requests around quickly is the most important thing to me at the moment. We're going to have all the tools we need to do so by this weekend hopefully, and things should start to get filled at a good clip after that. I also want to help out with crafting trees, both by creating new items and by making the items we have in shops now craftable (many are not unfortunately).

That's all I got for the moment. When I get started on a project and make some real headway, I'll let you guys know about it here.

Tutorial: Assembly Editing

Mina's Tutorial on Assembly Creating

Firstly, before you begin working on assemblies, make sure that you have gained approval from a member of staff and have put a proposal forward covering what you want to add to the world.

Plan out the object you want to make the assembly for. What tools are going to be needed. What items will be consumed. Do they need to be in their inventory or on the ground?

A typical plan might include a summary like this:

Item to be crafted: a serving of aromatic fish stew
Type of craft: Cook
Skill level: 1

Components:
(to be made) a large brown and green speckled (in inventory, used up, 1 required)(sell price: 7)
(29016) a large, cast-iron stove (in room, not to be used up, 1 required)
(29017) a large, blackened cast-iron frying pan (in inventory, not to be used up, 1 required)
(to be made) a sprig of fresh thyme (in inventory, used up, 1 required)(buy price: 2)
(to be made) a knob of creamy, yellow butter (in inventory, used up, 1 required)(buy price:3)

Notes:

Remember that the crafting system is a simplified version of real life, it need not include every single item that would realistically be used to make it. Use the items already in the game as a guide.

If you are not sure, check with a staff member

The system is restrictive in that it requires the exact vnum in order to make it.

Use the existing tools (Where possible) rather than making new versions.

When creating the item to be made by the assembly, it is important to remember to ensure that the prices are set right, it will make a profit based on the consumable items used up. Test it out. Make sure it is making a profit as the cost listed on items in oedit is NOT the sell price of it.

After creating all the components and the final object produced, to set up the craft system, first type: assedit new [vnum of the item to be made].

Then, to get into the menu system, type: assedit [vnum of the item to be made]. This should yield a menu like below.

Assembly Number: The vnum of the item to be produced.
Number Produced: How many of the items will be produced. This can be set with option N.
Assembly Name: The short desc of the item to be produced.
Assembly Type: The type of 'craft' used to produce this item. This can be set with option T.
Skill Level Required: The amount of skill required to create an item. This can be set with option S.
Craft time: How long it takes to make the item. This can be set with option C. You will be then presented with the following menu and asked to enter a time.

Components: The list of components required and their attributes - In room, Used and number required. To add a component use option A. You will then need to edit it with option E to select the appropriate values for in room, used and number required.
Quit: This will exit you from the above menu. SAVEALL will need to be used to save the assembly to the area file.

Tutorial: Room Editing

Mina's Tutorial on Room Creating.

Create an ascii map of the area detailing what is roughly where. Submit this to the staff and if all is well, they will 'buildwalk' it for you - essentially turn the map into relevant vnums and link it all together.

You will need to be in the room as you edit it. When you are in the room you want to set up, type: redit. This will bring you into a menu that looks something like the following:

As you can see from the above, the room editing system is 'menu driven' with the options listed in bright green numbers & letters down the left of each column.

Room Number: This is the room vnum and usually cannot be changed.

Room Zone: This is the zone the room is connected to and also usually cannot be changed.

1) Name: This is the room name and is dispaleyed at the top when you type look. This is usually capatilised like a title and is 3-6 words long. For example: A Large Bedroom.

2) Description: This is the full description of the room. It is very important that you either enter the information into the buffer provided one line at a time (make sure it is not over 80 characters per line) or that you use /f (format) before you exit the buffer and save the information. <- THIS IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. Make sure the description meets the Shadow Siege building standards (see help building for more information).

3) Room Flags: Most are self explanatory, but one of the most commonly used is 'inside'. Make sure this is set on any inside room or people will complain about it raining inside :)

4) Sector Type: Select the sector type by entering the letter along side the one you want. City is used for the streets of Telantha, and 'inside' for buildings.

5 - G) These are all the rooms exits. To add a room exit, select the one direction you want to add it in by choosing the corresponding letter. For example, 5 for North.

 1) Exit to: This is the vnum of the room you are creating the exit to.

 2) Description: This is the description of the exit. This is seen when someone types look <direction>.

 3) Door name: This is the keywords used for the door. It is important that the first one be door and the following ones be the long version of the direction and a shortened version. For example: door north n (as in the image above).

 4) Key: If the room is able to be locked and unlocked, you will need to create a key and put the vnum of the key here.

 5) Door flags: If the door is able to be opened, you must have it set here as 'Is a door'.

 6) Purge exit: This option is used to purge the exit.

 0) Type 0 to quit this menu and be taken back to the previous one.

H) Extra descriptions: You can set extra descriptions for the room so that if someone types: Look crevice (or some other keyword) a different description is shown.

S) Scripts: No longer in redit

Q) Quit: To finish up, select this option. Then if you wish to save your changes, select Y. To have the information saved permanently, you will need to get a member of staff to 'saveall' for you or they will be lost.
